had breakfast w LF at clementi hawker centre. zin came later and treated us siew mai, to make up for being late. ok, we forced her to treat us. Then we went big bookshop to LSLS. wow... v long neva shop in such a bkshop and it still fascinates me. pretty but useless stationery, cheap but small sch bags... den, went home, punggol home. ate instant mee (cos i miss eating instant mee) and slept. woke up by mum coming home, had dinner den her soup. supposedly to fight heatiness. den, watch tv and sleep.

I couldn't sleep & I scolded a little kid who kept climbing over me while I slept. Late afternoon, went to Marine Parade to bk Bintan Hols. Chose the wrong route. Spent 1.5 hrs on 197. shucks! shd haf taken from bedok. My return trip took only 1 hr.

Mood Today Follows The Cosine Function

zenov was in a rather good mood today, cos he learnt to make a serial cable. For the uninitiated, a serial cable is one that we use to connect the computer to its peripherals, though it has different varieties. What zenov learnt was to make a 9-pin serial cable by soldering the wires into the sockets. It was really fun to melt the solder and slot the wire in where it stayed in place in the blink of an eye. It was also interesting to watch his brand new soldering iron smoke and turn brown through oxidation. His Lab TA also praised him for finishing soldering faster than anyone else.

So zenov left the lab, which was said to be the easiest of the string of lab sessions for the module, feeling rather happy. He went to study in study room, his new fave, partly cos the place was quieter and less smelly than the library. Though he didn't really self study, but did some research for his project module EE3001.

Yup, cos he had a meeting for his project mates later.

Let's have some background explanation: EE2001 & EE3001 are both project modules. The former was technical based, where the group was supposed to make a device according to a theme. Like this sem, it was: Intelligent Home. So a group can go and make an automatic vacuum cleaner. The latter, on the other hand, is where the group comes up with an innovation, prove that it is feasible (meaning no need to build the actual device like EE2001) and make a business plan for it.

In zenov's opinion, it means EE3001 focus on the marketing of a product more than the technicality of the product.

There is this typical engin guy A in zenov's group who believed totally otherwise. Apparently, he didn't take any marketing module of some sort, cos his pet phrases were:

1) Marketing is easy lah. Put ad on tv can liaoz.

2) Marketing is NOT important, it's the feasibility/design of the product that is!

3) Aiyah, the 2 people in-charge of marketing have nothing to do!

4) iPod succeeded cos of its good design. Marketing plays no part. Apple didn't put in a lot of money on marketing.

5) Just say we find some stores to sell the product can liaoz.

6) We sell to everybody lah. iPod also can sell to everybody.

No matter how much zenov told him that marketing is not as brainless as he thinks it is, he still put down the marketing aspect as if it was child's play. No wonder so many innovative products failed, cos those who invented it, the engineers, have no fucking sense of business.

1) Marketing is about selling of a product. It goes from positioning of the product in the market to finding the best channels of distribution. All aspects affect the amount of money you spend.

2) zenov DUNCH think Creative products are badly designed. If anything, it has more intuitive buttons than iPod. But comparison is not the issue here. A good design is nothing if you dunno HOW TO SELL IT.

3) Marketing is NOT SO EASY. If not, the module committe would not have wanted us to break down specifically into Marketing, Financial and Technical Sub-groups. Marketing people has their part to do and it's NOT CHILD PLAY.

4) iPod succeeded not cos of its good design, but its SUPERB MARKETING STRATEGY. Meaning, it just didn't throw in tonnes of cash (which it did in atronomical terms), but they reviewed every aspect of the marketing strategy and found the best balance of it all.

5) Selling products is not as easy as putting products on the shelves. The fact that you may get a space on the shelf is already a major problem in the retailing world.

6) Nabeh cheebye. iPod 'sell to everybody' cos it has the money to dump for marketing. But even iPOD is not SOLD TO EVERYBODY. They still segment the market and target the young and tech savvy. Even so, they still spent bloody lots on marketing.

zenov really dunch know what to say. A made their meeting turn out to be so awkward. zenov knows the others were silent, cos they believed zenov had a point and the other guy was being irritating.

zenov mean, another guy B who didn't turn up today was always in a heated argument with him in previous meetings. B was always objecting to A's ideas and all A said in rebuttal was: No no no no no! And that was all. He expected the others to accept his 5 Nos as an explanation to a question to a loophole in the idea he presented.

zenov went away from the meeting feeling all shitty and shitty. To think he actually had a think-he-knew-it-all cum think-he-always-right guy in his group. How is he gonna survive? zenov dunch need an A nor does he want to fail. But at this rate, zenov foresees he's gonna have a hard time for the rest of the sem.

arrggghhhhh!!! zenov tugged at his hair at the thought of this and wow! more hair dropped...

But then, zenov's mood turned better after he attended GAW briefing. The lousy mood persisted, but well, it did turn for the better, especially when he went for post-GAW briefing outing at Clementi.

zenov, J1 and Ives decided to go clementi KFC to wait for tC. On the way, they met zq, cal and edwin, so they all made their way to KFC together. tC came with luke and bs and then after the 3 had their dinner, the whole group went to have dumpling balls.

Nice get together. Having people around him who dunch irritate him makes zenov happy. These people joked and crapped. Though you may say this is quite shallow, but zenov is a shallow person. He believes that if you can be happy being shallow, why not? Yes, friendships become 'more solid' after crisis, and apparently such crisis has not occured even in zenov's Ma'at. However, it doesn't mean that to make a friendship advance, you should CREATE crisis.

zenov went away feeling quite chirpy, even though before the group decided to head home, it started raining cats and dogs. zenov loves rain and coldness. Being with some of his good friends at such fave settings made him feel very blissed.

He took 147 home, which was a spanking new bus. New meaning it was a new design and model. zenov was impressed at the cleanliness and how spacious the bus was. Not smelly! Not dirty! The seats were not broken or missing a handle. Though speaking of handles, there was a lack of vertical hand bars as was the in the older models. No walking while the bus is moving, k! The only grip you have is the one at the staircase!

zenov also smsed Landlady while on the bus. It was actually the 1st time that he sms a person that old! haha... The last record was held by his signal store IC while he was in army, and that IC was 36 (at that point of time). After that, the age cap dropped to 28, then 26 (Bryan lee is still an active friend leh... haha...). In zenov's opinion, it's really hard to communicate with people much older than him, much less using new technology. Apparently Landlady was a very tech savvy woman unlike others her age.

zenov reaches home to a humongous plate of bee hoon. haha... zenov is rubbish bin...

I never saved anything for the trip back, do you? at 11:22 PM
